As a social sport and activities hub our club’s overriding objective is to connect and build communities. The club etiquette guidelines reflect this and encourage individual members to observe the courtesies expected and follow the rules that apply to games and activities.
Common sense – common courtesy
• A simple introduction to new players is a great ice breaker.
• Only use the shuttlecock that is allocated to you.
• New shuttlecocks are allocated for game play only and shouldn’t be used when warming up.
• A shuttlecock toss will determine the side to serve.
• Always wait for a break in play to retrieve shuttlecocks from adjacent courts.
• Win or lose acknowledge all players on completion to reflect the friendly spirit of the game.
• Be helpful, don’t sit on the sidelines, offer your help when setting up the courts and at close of playing sessions.
Game Play
• Fair play by all players will avoid disputed calls. The player nearest to the shuttlecock has the final decision.
• If there’s doubt about a call it is best to err in favour of your opponent or to play a let.
• If the shuttlecock hits the ceiling, the call is a fault.
• If installations such as vents and lights are hit a let should be played.
• When there is heavy demand it is essential that all games are concluded within a reasonable time frame. In the event of prolonged game play it may be necessary for games to be concluded at the request of the next scheduled player/s.
Safety First
• Always walk around courts where play is in progress.
• A tidy court is a safe court so be responsible for all items you bring to the venue and leave the court as you found it.
• The safety guidelines are detailed in the club indemnity form which must be read and signed by all players and officials.
The purpose of these guidelines is to ensure fair play and to promote an environment where players young and old, experienced or novice can improve health and well-being, grow their skills and above all have fun in the process.
